Continuation of Session 03. This session demonstrates supernatural negotiation, racing against time, creative problem-solving, and the consequences of heroic sacrifice.
🎭 The Party
NORA
Status: Unconscious, possessed by parasite
HP: 1/12 | Willpower: 0/5
Condition: Dying, being consumed
GRIM
Status: Active, running to rescue
HP: 10/12 | Willpower: 4/5
Drive: "I don't lose people. Not again."
LYRA
Status: Active, empathic connection to Nora
HP: 8/10 | Willpower: 3/5
Ability: Can sense Nora's fading life force
Previously...
Nora sacrificed herself to save the dying domain, offering her body as a new host to a parasitic entity that was consuming the Genius. The domain stabilized, but Nora collapsed—now slowly being devoured from within. Grim and Lyra race to reach her before it's too late.
🏃 Scene 1: The Race
Through the Dying Garden
TRICKSTER:
"We pick up exactly where we left off. Grim, Lyra—you're sprinting through the stabilized but wounded garden. The sky is no longer cracking, but the ground is scarred, trees are ash sculptures, and the butterflies circle overhead like a funeral procession. Lyra, you can feel Nora's presence—faint, flickering, like a candle in a storm."
LYRA (Casey):
"How far is she? Can I tell how much time she has left?"
TRICKSTER:
"Roll Umbra + Empathy to gauge her condition. TN 12."
LYRA:
"Umbra +4, Empathy +3. (rolls) 18."
TRICKSTER:
"You feel her fading—like water evaporating. At this rate, she has maybe 15 minutes before the parasite finishes consuming her essence. The heart is 10 minutes away at a sprint. You might make it. But..."
"...you also sense something else. The parasite is aware of you. It's curious. It remembers Nora trying to bargain with it."
GRIM (Taylor):
"We run faster. Athletics check to close the distance?"
TRICKSTER:
"Forma + Athletics, TN 14. Success means you shave 3 minutes off the trip. Failure means you hit an obstacle—collapsing terrain."
GRIM:
"Forma +4, Athletics +3. 7 dice. (rolls) 16! Success!"
TRICKSTER:
"You vault over fallen trees, dodge crumbling sinkholes, and arrive at the Genius's heart in 7 minutes. What you see: Nora, unconscious, floating a foot off the ground. The parasite is a black mass surrounding her like a cocoon. Tendrils pulse with stolen light—her light. The massive crystal butterfly—the weakened Genius—hovers nearby, watching."
⚔️ Scene 2: First Attempt
Attack the Parasite
GRIM:
"I draw my blade and charge. I'm cutting that thing off her!"
LYRA:
"Wait! If it's fused with her, you might hurt Nora too!"
TRICKSTER:
"Lyra's right. I'm going to be clear about the stakes: attacking the parasite physically will damage it and Nora. For every wound you inflict, she takes half that damage too. She's at 1 HP. Do you still want to attack?"
GRIM:
"(stops mid-charge) ...No. No, I don't. (sheaths blade)Damn it. What else can we do?"
LYRA:
"The parasite was curious about us. Maybe... maybe we can talk to it? Nora tried to bargain before. Maybe we offer something better."
TRICKSTER:
"The Genius—the crystal butterfly—flutters closer. Its voice is like wind chimes. 'The Hunger understands only want. It craves essence. To bargain, you must offer something it desires more than your friend.'"
GRIM:
"Like what? It was eating a god! What do we have that's worth more than that?"
TRICKSTER:
"The Genius hesitates. 'The Hunger came from the Flux—the space between domains. It is lost, alone, starving. It does not want to kill. It wants... to belong. To be fed. Regularly. Without having to hunt.'"
🤝 Scene 3: The Negotiation
Speaking to Hunger
LYRA:
"I approach the parasite. Slowly. I reach out with my empathy. 'I know you can feel me. I know you're scared. You don't have to keep running, keep hunting. We can find you a home.'"
TRICKSTER:
"The parasite's tendrils pause mid-pulse. You feel its attention—alien, hungry, but... curious. Roll Umbra + Empathy to establish connection. TN 16."
LYRA:
"Umbra +4, Empathy +3. 7 dice. (rolls) 21! Critical!"
TRICKSTER:
"Images flood your mind—the parasite's memories. Endless void. Drifting between domains. Finding the Chrysalis by accident. The first taste of the Genius's essence—warmth, belonging, finally not alone. But then the Genius weakened. The domain started dying. Panic. Hunger returning."
"And now: fear. The parasite is afraid it will kill Nora like it killed the Genius. It doesn't want to. It just doesn't know how to stop."
GRIM:
"So it's not evil. It's just... lost."
LYRA:
"I speak to it again: 'What if we found you a host that could feed you without dying? Something powerful enough to sustain you permanently?'"
TRICKSTER:
"The parasite's response is a wave of desperate hope. It shows you what it needs: something with regenerating essence. Something that heals faster than it can drain. The Genius was close, but not quite enough."
"The crystal butterfly flickers. 'I know of such beings. The Count's gardens... they grow essence-rich organisms. Deliberately. But to reach them...'"
GRIM:
"We'd have to go to the Count's Domain. And ask nicely. For a Ledger-level favor."
📜 Scene 4: The Deal
Supernatural Contract
TRICKSTER:
"Here's the situation. The parasite will release Nora if you guarantee it a new host within 24 hours. If you fail—it returns, finds her, and finishes feeding. This is a supernatural contract. Roll Umbra + Occult to formalize it. TN 14."
LYRA:
"I don't have Occult. Just Umbra +4. 4 dice. (rolls) ...11. Failure."
TRICKSTER:
"The contract is imperfect. The parasite accepts, but there's a loophole: if you fail, the parasite can claim any of you—not just Nora. It's hungry enough to accept whichever host is weakest when the 24 hours expire."
GRIM:
"So now we're all on the hook. (sighs) Fine. We'd better not fail then."
TRICKSTER:
"The parasite releases Nora. She crumples to the ground, gasping. HP restored to 3 (minimum viable), Willpower at 1. She's weak, traumatized, but alive."
NORA (Jamie, rejoining):
"(croaky voice) What... what happened? I was in the dark and then... it let me go. Why?"
LYRA:
"Because you bought us time. And now we're buying it a home. Rest. We've got work to do."
🚪 Scene 5: The Count's Door
Seeking an Audience
TRICKSTER:
"You return to The Passage. The Count's Door is there—ornate, intimidating, locked to all but the invited. Except... today, it's slightly ajar."
GRIM:
"That's... not normal. Is it a trap?"
TRICKSTER:
"A voice—smooth, amused—drifts from beyond. 'Trap implies I need tricks to catch you. No, travelers. I've been watching. You saved a domain at great personal cost. That's... interesting. Come in. Let's discuss what you want.'"
NORA:
"We don't have a choice. The clock's ticking. I go through the door."
TRICKSTER:
"Beyond the door: The Counting House. Endless shelves of ledgers. Shadows that move wrong. And at the center, seated at a massive desk—The Count. He looks... ordinary. Perfectly unremarkable. That's what makes him terrifying."
"'You need something from my gardens,' he says. 'An essence-regenerator. For the Hunger. Yes, I know what you bound yourselves to. The question is: what will you pay?'"
💰 Scene 6: The Price
Ledger Negotiation
LYRA:
"What do you want? We saved 68 people and stabilized a domain. That has to be worth something."
TRICKSTER (as The Count):
"It is worth precisely 68 Ledger credits. The domain stabilization adds 15 more. But what you want—a Bloom-Eater from my personal collection—costs 150 credits. You're... (checks an invisible ledger) 67 credits short."
GRIM:
"What counts as 67 credits? What can we offer?"
TRICKSTER (as The Count):
"Options." He spreads three cards on the desk.
OPTION 1
A favor. Owed. Collectible at my discretion. Worth 50 credits each. Two of you sign.
OPTION 2
A memory. Something precious. Each of you sacrifices one treasured memory—worth 22 credits each.
OPTION 3
A truth. Tell me a secret about someone powerful in Nowhere Land. Something I don't know. 67 credits if it's good.
NORA:
"(thinking) The Genius told me something... when it showed me the parasite's origin. There's a rift in the Flux—a permanent tear. Things are slipping through. Not just one parasite. Many. The Hunger was just the first to find a domain."
TRICKSTER:
"The Count's composure flickers—barely, but you catch it. He's genuinely surprised."
"'A rift. In my Flux. Interesting. Very interesting.' He waves his hand, and a crystal terrarium appears on the desk. Inside: a pulsing, flower-like organism. 'The Bloom-Eater. Regenerates essence faster than most Geniuses. Your Hunger will never need to hunt again.'"
LYRA:
"We take it. And we offer the Bloom-Eater to the Hunger as its new home."
🌸 Scene 7: The Transfer
Feeding the Hunger
TRICKSTER:
"You return to the Chrysalis. The Hunger is waiting—a dark cloud, patient but visibly straining. Time left: 2 hours. You hold out the Bloom-Eater."
NORA:
"'This is your new home. It will feed you forever. All you have to do is accept it—and never hunt sentient beings again.'"
TRICKSTER:
"The Hunger extends a tendril. Touches the Bloom-Eater. Tastes it. You feel its reaction through your connection—warmth, satisfaction, home. The dark mass flows into the terrarium, merging with the plant. For a moment, everything goes dark."
"Then the Bloom-Eater blooms—petals unfurling, now streaked with shadow. A new hybrid. The Hunger sighs in your minds: Thank you."
LYRA:
"'You're welcome. Be well.' (to the others) I think... I think we just made peace with something from the Flux."
GRIM:
"'And warned the Count about a bigger problem. Think that'll come back to bite us?'"
TRICKSTER:
"'Almost certainly. But that's a problem for future you.' The crystal butterfly—the Genius—lands on Nora's shoulder. Its voice is warm now.'My domain is weak but healing. You are welcome here always. We remember those who sacrifice for us.'"
📊 GM Debrief
Session Analysis
What Worked:
- • Immediate continuation of cliffhanger maintained tension
- • Parasite as sympathetic creature, not monster
- • Multiple solutions offered (combat, empathy, bargaining)
- • Failed Occult roll created lasting consequences
- • The Count appearance felt earned, not forced
Mechanics Used:
- • Empathy (TN 12): Gauge Nora's condition (success)
- • Athletics (TN 14): Sprint to the heart (success)
- • Empathy (TN 16): Connect with parasite (critical success)
- • Occult (TN 14): Formalize contract (failure → loophole)
- • Ledger Exchange: Information for artifact (success)
Story Seeds Planted:
- • The Flux Rift—more parasites are coming
- • The Count now knows about the rift (and owes them nothing)
- • The Hunger (now "The Bloom-Hunger") is a potential ally
- • The Chrysalis domain is recovering and grateful
- • Nora has psychological trauma from being consumed
"Some monsters just need to be understood. Others need to be fed. The trick is knowing which is which."
Runtime: 2.5 hours
Ending: Resolution with future hooks established
