What Is a Domain?
Domain Anatomy
Every domain possesses five core attributes:
Willpower (0-10)
The domain's active consciousness. 0 = asleep, 1-10 = active, -1 to -5 = dying.
Ecosystem
Physical environment: Tropical swamp, frozen tundra, urban sprawl, impossible geometry.
Exaltations (3-5)
Unique artifacts, events, or beings that embody the domain's essence.
Barriers
Portals (one-way, bidirectional, randomized), physical borders, or paradoxical conditions.
Blessings & Curses
Conditional modifiers granted to creatures based on their actions (-5 to +5 scale).
Domains & Drift
The Territory Claims You
Spending time in domains increases your Drift—your connection to Nowhere Land. The territory slowly claims those who linger.
Drift Accumulation in Domains:
- • +1 Drift: Each portal crossed (any direction)
- • +1 Drift: Each week spent in a single domain
- • +1 Drift: Becoming Exalted in a domain
- • +1 Drift: Killing or claiming a domain's Genii
Reducing Drift Through Understanding:
- • -1 Drift: Complete map of a domain's geography
- • -1 Drift: Document 5 species of flora/fauna
- • -1 Drift: Understand a domain's Willpower patterns
- • -1 Drift: Discover a portal's activation conditions
Blessings & Curses
When you act in alignment with a domain's Willpower, you may gain Blessings (+1 to +5). When you oppose it, you risk Curses (-1 to -5). These modifiers apply only within the domain—unless you achieve Exalted status.
Blessing/Curse Mechanics
- Scale: -5 (Curse) to +5 (Blessing). Zero = neutral.
- Mutual Exclusion: Cannot have both Blessings and Curses in the same domain. Gaining one removes the other.
- Detection: Roll Arcane Resonance vs. (Domain Willpower × 4) to sense Blessings/Curses on a creature.
- Sensory Markers: Each domain's Blessings/Curses manifest as unique smells, textures, or visual auras.
🎭 Example:
In the Verdant Tangle (jungle domain), Blessings smell like rain-soaked moss and grant chlorophyll-tinged skin. Curses reek of rot and cause bark-like lesions.
Exalted Status: Permanent Power
When you accumulate 5 Blessings in a domain, you may attempt to become Exalted:
- ✓ Roll Arcane Resonance vs. (Willpower × 4 + 20)
- ✓ Success: Choose one Blessing to remain active outside the domain
- ✓ Failure: All Blessings become Curses (domain rejects you)
- ✓ +1 Drift: Exaltation always increases your connection to Nowhere Land
⚠️ Risk vs. Reward:
Exaltation is powerful but dangerous. Only attempt when truly aligned with the domain's nature.
Domain States
💤 Asleep
Willpower: 0
No Blessings/Curses function. Can be awakened by significant changes to ecosystem or population.
🌟 Active
Willpower: 1-10
Functions normally. Higher Willpower = stronger Blessings/Curses, harder to change.
☠️ Dying
Willpower: -1 to -5
Random Blessings become Curses. Domain shrinks 10%/week. Can be killed or saved.
Portals: Gateways Between Worlds
Portals are the arteries of Nowhere Land—shimmering thresholds that connect domains (or link to the real world). Each has unique properties:
