🚪 THE PASSAGE (Arrival Domain)

The First Step into Nowhere Land

The Passage is where most travelers first enter Nowhere Land—an infinite corridor of doors, each leading to a different domain. It's neutral ground: no Genius, no Count presence, just choices.

  • 8 (Stable)
  • Endless hallway, soft golden light, impossible doors
  • The First Door (origin point), The Last Door (never found), The Mirror Door (reflects traveler's regrets)
  • "Safe Haven" (cannot be attacked in The Passage)
  • "Indecision" (staying longer than 1 hour causes -1 Anima per hour)
  • None (The Passage belongs to no one)

"The walls stretch upward into infinity, lined with doors of every material: oak, iron, glass, bone, light itself. Each door hums with potential—some louder than others. The floor is smooth obsidian, reflecting doors that don't exist on the walls above. There's no ceiling, just a gradient from golden warmth to violet darkness. You hear distant footsteps—other travelers, perhaps, or echoes of yourself making different choices."

The Count's Door

Leads to: The Counting House
Lock: Invitation only (Count decides)
Trickster Hook: Major plot moments, Ledger business

🎯 Encounter: The Door Merchant

Setup: An old woman sits on a stool beside a particularly ornate door, knitting.

Interaction: She offers "safe passage" through her door (leads to wealthy, stable domain) in exchange for "a memory you cherish." If accepted, player loses access to one positive backstory element (The Drive or The Mystery from character creation) but gains +3 Ledger credit.

Twist: She's testing compassion—refusing costs nothing. Accepting shows willingness to sacrifice for shortcuts (The Count notes this).

🌿 THE VERDANT TANGLE

The Living Forest

  • 12 (Strong)
  • Dense jungle, bioluminescent flora, sentient vines
  • The Heart Tree (central Genius home), The Overgrowth (portal nexus), The Roots That Remember (ancestral archive)
  • "Forest's Whisper" (+2 Survival in natural domains), "Photosynthesis" (heal 1 HP/hour in sunlight)
  • "Thorned" (movement through dense areas = 1 damage), "Lost Direction" (-2 to Navigation checks)
  • The Vine Stag (see Bestiary)

"Canopy so thick the sky is myth. Trunks wider than houses twist upward, wrapped in vines that pulse with faint blue light. The air tastes of rain and growing things. Flowers bloom and wilt in seconds, their petals carpeting paths that shift when you're not looking. You hear whispers—not wind, but the forest itself, murmuring in a language older than words."

⚠️ Hazards:

  • Strangler Vines: Athletics TN 14 or grappled (3 damage/round, escape TN 16)
  • Spore Clouds: Anima TN 18 or hallucinate (see threats that aren't there)
  • Quickmud: Survival TN 12 to detect, TN 16 to escape if caught

  • Ironbark: Weapon crafting material (+1 damage to wooden weapons)
  • Whisperleaf: Consume to understand plant communication (1 hour duration)

Volcanic Desolation

  • 6 (Declining)
  • Lava flows, obsidian fields, ashfall, geysers
  • The Forge of Remnants (crafting site), The Caldera Portal (unstable)
  • "Heat Resistant" (half fire damage)
  • "Scorched Lungs" (-1 Forma per hour exposed)
  • The Magma Titan (hostile, rarely seen)

"Heat slams into you like a physical wall. Black glass crunches underfoot, reflecting rivers of molten rock that carve glowing scars across the landscape. The sky is perpetual twilight—orange and bruised purple. Ash falls like snow, coating everything in gray dust. In the distance, a mountain erupts, not in violence but slow inevitability. This domain is dying, and it knows."

🔨 Special Location: The Forge of Remnants

A massive anvil sits beside a lava pool. Ancient runes glow on its surface. This is an Exaltation site—weapons forged here gain +1 damage permanently, but the crafter must sacrifice 1 Wound (they pour pain into the metal).

Trickster Note: Players can craft legendary weapons here, but at cost. Track Wounds carefully.

Infinite Archive

  • 15 (Very Strong)
  • Endless stacks, floating books, gravity-defying architecture
  • The Index (knows location of every book), The Forbidden Section (cursed knowledge), The Whispering Gallery (prophecy chamber)
  • "Speed Reading" (read entire book in 1 hour), "Perfect Recall" (+2 to memory-based checks)
  • "Silence Enforced" (speaking = 2 damage to speaker)
  • The Librarian (ancient, helpful if respectful)

Finding Specific Information:

  1. 1. Define Research Goal: "I want to learn about The Count's origins"
  2. 2. Investigation Check: TN varies by obscurity (10-24)
  3. 3. Time Investment: 1d6 hours
  4. 4. Result: On success, Trickster provides 3 truthful facts + 1 false lead

Example Results (Count's Origins): "He was the first traveler" (true), "He's imprisoned here" (true), "He can be killed with a specific artifact" (false—artifact doesn't exist).
