This session demonstrates downtime mechanics, training sequences, character development, and relationship building between adventures.
🎭 Session Context
The Calm Before
Setup: The party has agreed to journey to the light-realm to negotiate closure of the rift. The Librarian estimates three months of preparation are needed. This session covers highlights from that period— training, bonding, and small adventures.
Format: "Montage" style with vignettes. Each player gets spotlight moments. Minimal dice, maximum roleplay.
⏰ Montage Structure
Downtime Framework
TRICKSTER'S APPROACH:
"For this session, we're doing something different. Three months pass—but we'll only play the moments that matter. Each of you gets three vignettes: one training scene, one relationship scene, and one surprise challenge. At the end, you'll each gain one new skill or trait."
TRAINING
Learn a new skill or improve existing one. Roll determines how well you master it.
RELATIONSHIP
Deepen a bond with an NPC or party member. Creates future narrative hooks.
CHALLENGE
Random complication. Success improves standing; failure creates debt.
🌿 Nora's Montage
Training: Flux Navigation
TRICKSTER:
"The Librarian has connected you with a rare expert—an entity called the Driftkeeper, native to the Flux itself. Training happens at the edge of reality, where domains thin into nothingness. What's your approach?"
NORA (Jamie):
"I lean into my Flux-Touched nature. I want to understand it, not fight it. 'Teach me to feel the currents instead of just following them.'"
TRICKSTER:
"Roll Anima + Lore, TN 14. This is the culmination of weeks of practice— one roll represents the whole arc."
NORA:
"(rolls) 19! Solid success."
TRICKSTER:
"You gain the trait 'Flux Sense': You can detect Flux entities, disturbances, and pathways within a domain. +2 to all checks related to Flux navigation or detection. The Driftkeeper is impressed— they've rarely seen a mortal adapt so quickly."
Relationship: The Bloom-Hunger
TRICKSTER:
"You visit The Chrysalis to check on the Bloom-Hunger—the entity you saved from parasitism. It's settled into its Bloom-Eater host, but it reaches out when you arrive. It remembers you."
NORA:
"I spend time with it. Just... being present. Showing it that connection doesn't have to mean consuming."
TRICKSTER:
"It shows you its memories—not just pain now, but contentment. It's learning. And it offers something: a permanent link. If you agree, you'll always be able to sense the Bloom-Hunger, and it you. A bond of mutual awareness."
NORA:
"'I accept. You're not a monster. You never were. Just lost.' I form the bond."
TRICKSTER:
"Noted: Nora has a Soul Bond with the Bloom-Hunger. This will matter later."
Challenge: The Library Fire
TRICKSTER:
"During your training, an alarm echoes through the Library. A fire has broken out in the Forbidden Section—the place where dangerous knowledge is kept sealed. The Librarian is elsewhere. What do you do?"
NORA:
"I run toward it. Fire doesn't scare me—losing knowledge does. Can I use my Flux sense to find the safest path?"
TRICKSTER:
"Creative application! Roll Anima + your new Flux Sense bonus. TN 16."
NORA:
"Anima +5, Flux Sense +2. (rolls) 18!"
TRICKSTER:
"You navigate through the smoke and chaos, finding pocket safe zones. You reach the fire's source: a containment ward has cracked, releasing something. You manage to reinforce the ward before the fire spreads. The Librarian arrives as you finish—impressed, grateful, and now owes you a favor."
⚔️ Grim's Montage
Training: Combat Adaptation
TRICKSTER:
"Your combat skills are good—but they're designed for physical opponents. Light-realm entities are conceptual. The Librarian assigns you to train with the Antibody Guardians from The Chrysalis. They fight on instinct, not thought."
GRIM (Taylor):
"I focus on reaction time. If I can't predict them, I'll just be faster. 'Hit me. Again. Faster.'"
TRICKSTER:
"Roll Forma + Athletics, TN 14. Weeks of getting knocked down and getting back up."
GRIM:
"(rolls) 17. Success."
TRICKSTER:
"You gain 'Instinct Fighter': +2 to defense rolls against unpredictable or supernatural attacks. You've learned to fight without thinking—your body reacts before your mind."
Relationship: Lyra
TRICKSTER:
"One evening, you find Lyra sitting alone on the Library balcony, staring at the infinite stacks. She seems... troubled."
GRIM:
"I sit next to her. Don't say anything. Just... be present."
TRICKSTER (as Lyra—played for Casey):
"'I can feel them, you know. All the minds in the Flux. Lost, scared, hungry. And I'm asking myself—what if we fail? What if we make it worse?'"
GRIM:
"'Then we fail. And we try again. That's what we do.' I put a hand on her shoulder. 'You don't have to carry them all, Lyra. That's why you have us.'"
TRICKSTER:
"Casey—Lyra smiles. A genuine one. The bond between Grim and Lyra deepens. Note: Trust Bond formed. Future checks to help each other gain advantage."
Challenge: The Count's Messenger
TRICKSTER:
"One of the Count's servants appears in the Library. It speaks directly to you: 'The Count is aware of your training. He wishes to know: are you preparing to leave his domain... or to challenge him?'"
GRIM:
"I look it in the eye. 'Tell the Count we're fixing a problem he's ignored for centuries. If he wants to help, he knows where to find us. If not—stay out of our way.'"
TRICKSTER:
"Roll Umbra + Intimidation, TN 16. This is about sending a message."
GRIM:
"(rolls) ...12. Failed."
TRICKSTER:
"The servant doesn't flinch. 'The Count appreciates your... candor. He will remember it.' It vanishes. You've made yourself noticed—but not necessarily in a good way. The Count is watching more closely now."
💜 Lyra's Montage
Training: Light-Realm Languages
TRICKSTER:
"The Librarian has texts on light-realm communication—not words, but concepts. Shapes. Emotions made precise. If you're going to negotiate, you need to speak their language."
LYRA (Casey):
"I'm an empath. Emotions are my language. I'll study every day. This is what I was made for."
TRICKSTER:
"Roll Umbra + Lore with advantage—your empathy gives you a foundation. TN 16."
LYRA:
"(rolls) 21! Yes!"
TRICKSTER:
"You gain 'Luminous Speech': You can communicate basic concepts to light-realm entities without misunderstanding. +2 to all social checks with beings from that realm. You're the party's diplomat now."
Relationship: The Librarian
TRICKSTER:
"During your studies, The Librarian often stays late, watching you work. One night, they speak: 'You remind me of myself. Before the rift. Before the guilt.'"
LYRA:
"'What were you like? Before?'"
TRICKSTER (as The Librarian):
"'Hopeful. Foolish. Certain that knowledge could solve everything.' A sad smile. 'I still believe that. I just know the cost now.'"
LYRA:
"'Then teach me what you learned. All of it. So I don't make the same mistakes.'"
TRICKSTER:
"The Librarian becomes your mentor. Note: Mentor Bond. The Librarian will share secrets with you that they won't share with others."
Challenge: A Message from Home
TRICKSTER:
"One day, a letter appears. Written in your mother's handwriting—from the world you left behind. 'Dear [Lyra], I don't know if this will reach you. We're looking for you. Please come home.'"
LYRA:
"(long pause) How is this possible? I've been here for years."
TRICKSTER:
"The Librarian examines it. 'Time moves differently between realms. For them, you may have only been gone days. Weeks at most.' They look at you carefully. 'If you want to send a response... I can arrange it. But know this: re-establishing connection with your old life is dangerous. It creates... attachments. Weaknesses.'"
LYRA:
"'I write back. Just to say I'm alive and not to worry. I can't... I can't let them think I'm dead.'"
TRICKSTER:
"Note: Lyra has reconnected with her past. This creates vulnerability—someone could use her family against her. But it also gives her something to fight for."
