Bosses in Nowhere Land are not just bags of hit points. They are forces of nature, often tied directly to the domain itself.
The Anatomy of a Boss
Boss Mechanics
- Multiple Health Bars (Phases): A boss has 2-3 "Health Bars." When one is depleted, a Phase Shift occurs.
- Example: The Stone Golem shatters (Phase 1 ends), revealing a Magma Core (Phase 2 begins).
- Legendary Actions: Bosses can act after a player's turn. They get 1 Legendary Action per player in the party.
- Lair Actions: On Initiative count 20, the Domain itself attacks (e.g., vines grab players, floor turns to lava).
Designing a Phase Shift
A Phase Shift should change the stakes and the tactics required.
The Enrage
The boss deals double damage but takes double damage.
Tactical Shift: From defense to all-out offense (DPS race).
The Puzzle
The boss becomes immune to damage until players interact with 3 objects in the room.
Tactical Shift: From combat to mobility/skill checks.
Example Boss: The Mirror Count
Phase 1: The Duelist
The Count fights with a rapier. He parries almost everything.
- HP: 30
- Ability: Riposte (Deal 1 wound on every missed attack against him).
Phase 2: The Shattered Reflection
The Count shatters into 5 glass clones. Only one is real.
- HP: 15 (Real), 1 (Clones)
- Ability: Swap (Swap places with a clone as a reaction).
