They control the Fauna and Flora Domains, maintaining one of the most advanced civilizations in the In-Between through direct democracy, land stewardship, and the mystical practice of bonding with Ephemeral—biomachine golems that serve as companions, workers, and warriors.

🌸 HISTORY & ORIGINS
The Separation
"The Ephemen did not always exist. Once, their ancestors lived in The Passage and other domains alongside men—suffering under the same systems of oppression that have plagued every world. But in Nowhere Land, something changed. The domains responded to their will, their need, their desperation."
"The First Separation occurred centuries ago—or perhaps only decades; time is strange in Nowhere Land. A group of women travelers discovered the nascent Fauna Domain, a place where the Willpower responded to their nurturing. They stayed. They cultivated. They woke the Great Beast. And they decided they would not return to the worlds that had harmed them."
"Over generations, they developed their society: direct democracy, the Bonding Ritual, the Kaliopsis doctrine. The Flora Domain was colonized later, when the Verdant Mother recognized their harmony with her mycelial network. Now they are two domains, one people, united in sisterhood."
⚖️ POLITICAL STRUCTURE
Direct Democracy with Aleatory Selection
The Ephemen practice one of the most radical political systems in Nowhere Land: all citizens participate directly in governance, with positions filled by random selection (sortition) rather than election or inheritance.
THE SORTITION PROCESS:
When a governmental position needs filling—from local judges to domain-wide administrators—citizens submit their names to the Vessel of Lots. Seeds of varying colors are drawn, with the Verdant Mother's mycelial network (in Flora) or the Great Beast's intuition (in Fauna) guiding the selection toward those suited to the role.
REVOCABILITY OF MANDATE:
Any official can be recalled by simple majority vote at any time. No one holds permanent power. Terms are short—typically one seasonal cycle (one week in Flora Domain time). This prevents corruption and ensures all citizens gain experience in governance.
THE THREE DOMAINS OF POWER:
Every citizen must, at some point in their life, serve in judicial, legislative, and executive roles. This ensures that those who make laws have also enforced them and judged disputes—creating empathy across all branches of government.
👑 LEADERSHIP: THE THREE MOIRES & THE THREE PARQUES
The Three Moires (The Fates)
The spiritual and military leaders of the Ephemen—not rulers, but exemplars. They guide through wisdom and deed rather than command.
SALDIA THE ESPER
Chief Seer and eldest of the Moires. Can read domain currents and foresee threats. Cautious, patient, deeply protective. She moves between both domains maintaining spiritual balance.
KANAKOTA FEARLESS
Commander of the Ephemeral Host and the youngest Moire. Leads the vanguard against the Count. Her bonded companion is Tawny Guardian, a lion-headed Ephemeral. Fierce and uncompromising.
FAHRANI IXOLD
Diplomat and Portal Mistress. Master of the Ephemen's portal network. Negotiates with outside factions. Polished, patient, with a silver tongue that has prevented many wars.
The Three Parques (The Weavers)
The domain matriarchs—each responsible for one aspect of Ephemen territory.
CLOTHO OF THE ROOTS
Matriarch of the Flora Domain. Ancient and deeply attuned to the Verdant Mother. Rarely speaks, preferring the mycelial network. Her words carry prophetic weight.
LACHESIS OF THE HUNT
Matriarch of the Fauna Domain. Warrior-philosopher who leads defense. Scarred by battles with Partizan expansionists. Both hunter and protector.
ATROPOS OF THE EDGE
Guardian of the Abyssal Border. Watches the boundary with the Abyss, preventing Cult of Anandros incursions. Stern, fatalistic, willing to make hard choices.
🦁 THE EPHEMERAL HOST
Biomachine Golems of Bonded Consciousness
The Ephemen's most unique creation: Ephemeral—beings that were once domain Symbols, meant to fade when their original domains merged, but sustained through the Bonding Ritual. They are animal-like humanoids, part machine and part living creature, that develop consciousness through imprinting on animal companions.
THE BONDING RITUAL:
Performed at the Imprinting Pools in the Fauna Domain. A newborn Ephemeral is submerged alongside a chosen animal. The Ephemeral absorbs aspects of the animal's essence—form, behavior, instincts—and develops a symbiotic bond. The animal gains extended lifespan; the Ephemeral gains consciousness.
TYPES OF EPHEMERAL:
- Imprinted: Newly bonded, basic capabilities
- Developed: Bonded for months, personality emerging
- Ascended: Long-term bonded, formidable champions
- Withered: Bond broken, feral and dangerous
THE WITHERING:
If an Ephemeral loses its bonded animal, it begins to Withers. First feral, then monstrous. Finally, either inert stone or a Lost Chorus—a dangerous amalgamation of failed Ephemeral. The Ephemen hunt Withered Ephemeral mercifully when found.
🎭 KALIOPSIS: THE REJECTION OF THE GAZE
Cultural Practice and Civic Requirement
One of the most distinctive aspects of Ephemen society is Kaliopsis—the rejection of beauty standards and visual appeal. This practice is both philosophical and political: by abandoning the standards imposed by the male gaze, Ephemen reclaim their bodies as their own.
PRACTICE:
- Clothing is optional in Kaliopsis Fields
- Ornamentation and makeup are abandoned
- All beings are valued for essence, not appearance
- Sexual labor is freely contracted and respected
- Emotional labor is valued as social contribution
CITIZENSHIP:
Most Ephemen embrace Kaliopsis as a civic duty, but some refuse. Those who maintain concern with visual appeal are not denied citizenship, but they face social pressure. This creates tension between individual expression and collective values—a ongoing debate in Ephemen society.
⚔️ ENEMIES & CONFLICTS
The Cult of Anandros
Deep in The Abyss lies the mirror-opposite of the Ephemen: a society of men who have developed a religious hatred of women, particularly Ephemen. They call themselves the Cult of Anandros ("Man's Revenge").
- • Philosophy: Belief that the Ephemen represent everything wrong with creation; that masculine separation is the only path to purity
- • Practices: Ritual exclusion of women, demonization of feminine domains, military training for holy war against the Ephemen
- • Threat: High. They conduct raids across the Abyssal Border and have developed weapons specifically targeting the Verdant Mother's mycelial network
The Partizan Conflict
The Ephemen are ideological opponents of The Partizan. Where the Partizan seek to expand their federation and colonize new territories, the Ephemen view colonization as oppression. This creates constant tension at the borders.
THE CONFLICT:
Partizan colonists attempting to expand into Ephemen territory are met with the Ephemeral Host. The Ephemen offer no negotiation with men—the colonists must send women representatives. This creates complex situations where female Partizans must represent male interests, or the colonists are simply turned back.
The Count's Enmity
The Ephemen consider The Count their greatest enemy. His control of portals, his Ledger of debts, and his mysterious influence over Nowhere Land all threaten Ephemen sovereignty.
THE VANGUARD:
A special division of the Ephemeral Host—the Count's Watch—is dedicated to tracking and opposing the Count. They study his movements, interfere with his plans, and seek ways to contain or imprison him. This is the Ephemen's most secretive and dangerous operation.
🔥 INTERNAL CONFLICTS
Societal Debates
The Ephemen are not a monolithic society. Internal debates rage across their domains, creating political factions and philosophical divisions.
INCLUSION VS. EXCLUSION
How should the Ephemen treat trans women? Some argue they are women and welcome; others insist only those socialized as female understand the need for separation. The debate continues without resolution.
MALE CHILDREN
By law, male children must be exiled before adolescence. But what if they have nowhere to go? What if they were born in the domains and know no other home? The Spore Keepers often clash with the Expansionists over this issue.
EXPANSION VS. ISOLATION
Should the Ephemen "womenize" all of Nowhere Land, transforming it into a post-patriarchal paradise? Or should they maintain their borders and let others choose their own paths? The Expansionists and traditionalists debate this constantly.
KALIOPSIS EXTREMISM
Some Devotees practice radical Kaliopsis—living naked, refusing all ornamentation, seeking to erase the self entirely. Others find this extreme. The tension between individual expression and collective doctrine creates ongoing friction.
📜 SCENARIO HOOKS

The Exile's Return
A young man raised in the Flora Domain until age 12 and then exiled returns as an adult, seeking his birth mother. Whose side are the players on?
The Bonding Offer
A female PC is offered the chance to undergo the Bonding Ritual and receive an Ephemeral companion. This is a great honor—but it requires spending time in the Ephemen domains, away from the rest of the party. What happens while she's gone? And what if the bond creates a connection stronger than party loyalty?
The Cult Raid
The Cult of Anandros has developed a weapon that can sever Ephemeral bonds at range, causing mass Withering. The Ephemen need it destroyed—and they need the party to infiltrate the Abyss to do it. Can the players navigate the terrifying depths, and can they trust their Ephemen allies not to sacrifice them for the greater good?
We did not leave the world of men because we feared them. We left because we had the power to build something better. Come, sister. See what we have grown.
— — Saldia the Esper, Chief Seer of the Ephemen
